NGC 2442/3 (Meathook Galaxy)
In 2021, I received a high-quality dataset of the peculiar spiral galaxy NGC 2442/3 from the Insight Observatory, acquired with a telescope in Chile. The excellent southern sky conditions and professional equipment provided deep and detailed data, ideal for capturing the galaxy’s unusual morphology and faint outer structures.
NGC 2442 is located in the constellation Volans at a distance of approximately 50 million light-years. It is often nicknamed the “Meathook Galaxy” because of its strongly distorted spiral structure. One spiral arm appears stretched and curved dramatically outward, giving the galaxy its characteristic asymmetrical appearance.
Scientifically, NGC 2442 is a particularly interesting example of a galaxy shaped by gravitational interaction. Its distorted morphology is likely the result of a past encounter with a smaller companion galaxy or tidal interactions within its local group environment. These interactions have triggered enhanced star formation, especially along the bright spiral arms where numerous blue star-forming regions and dark dust lanes are visible.
The galaxy is also classified as an intermediate barred spiral galaxy and hosts an active central region with significant star-forming activity. Deep imaging reveals not only the bright inner structure but also faint outer extensions and tidal distortions that testify to the galaxy’s dynamic evolutionary history.
The high-quality dataset from Chile allowed for careful processing of both the luminous spiral arms and the subtle background structures, producing a detailed image of one of the most visually striking southern galaxies.
Data calibration and registration and the final processing was done with PixInsight. The result was as follows:
