NGC 2371-2 from my own backyard
I imaged the planetary nebula NGC 2371-2 several times during 2011 and 2012 from my backyard using a mixture of DSLR equipment and older CCD cameras such as the Meade DSI Pro II. Over time, I combined all of these different datasets into a single final image of this fascinating planetary nebula.
Although the individual datasets were acquired with very different cameras and imaging techniques, combining them allowed me to improve both the signal-to-noise ratio and the level of structural detail visible in the nebula. The CCD luminance data in particular helped to reveal finer internal features, while the DSLR exposures contributed natural color information to the final image.
NGC 2371 is located in the constellation Gemini at a distance of roughly 4,000–5,000 light-years. Interestingly, the object carries a double designation—NGC 2371 and NGC 2372—because early observers believed they were looking at two separate nebulae due to its bipolar appearance. In reality, both entries describe different parts of the same planetary nebula.
Scientifically, NGC 2371 is a bipolar planetary nebula formed when a dying Sun-like star expelled its outer layers into space. At the center lies a hot white dwarf whose intense ultraviolet radiation ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to glow strongly in emission lines such as Hα and [O III]. Deep images reveal a complex structure of lobes, knots, and faint jets extending outward from the central region, shaped by stellar winds and possibly by interactions within a binary star system.
Because of its relatively small angular size and intricate internal structure, NGC 2371 is a rewarding target for high-resolution imaging. Combining multiple datasets from different years and cameras allowed me to produce a much more detailed and refined final image than any single dataset alone could provide.
