NGC 2336 from my own „Sterntaucher“ observatory
In 2022, I imaged the spiral galaxy NGC 2336 from my observatory in Krefeld using a dual-rig setup. The luminance data were captured with a higher-resolution optical system, while the RGB color information was recorded simultaneously with a second telescope. For the final LRGB image, the RGB data were carefully upscaled to match the resolution of the luminance frames, allowing the detailed structural information from the luminance channel to define the image while preserving accurate color from the RGB dataset.
NGC 2336 is located in the constellation Camelopardalis at a distance of approximately 100 million light-years. It is a large and impressive barred spiral galaxy, classified as SABbc, with a particularly rich and well-developed spiral structure. Deep images reveal numerous tightly wound spiral arms filled with bright blue star-forming regions and intersected by delicate dark dust lanes.
The galaxy is especially interesting because of its high rate of star formation, visible through the abundance of luminous H II regions scattered throughout the disk. A relatively small central bar channels gas inward, helping to sustain activity in the inner regions while the outer spiral arms remain highly structured and rich in young stellar populations.
Because of its large apparent size and intricate detail, NGC 2336 is an excellent target for high-resolution imaging. The combination of deep luminance data and carefully matched RGB information allowed the final image to reveal both the fine structural detail of the galaxy and the subtle color differences between older yellowish stellar populations and the younger bluish star-forming regions.
Data calibration and registration and the final processing was done with PixInsight.
